Fashion Flowers For Summer
The New Collection : Domestic Jungle - Summer 1999

Bouvardia

< Bouvardia

Bouvardia is native to Mexico and its colour range is typically Latin American - bright, fiery colours that combine well. You might imagine the flowers dancing to the rhythmic tunes of a Mexican salsa in the hot summer sun. A monochrome bouquet of bouvardia can be transformed to give a steamy jungle aura, by inserting grasses, ferns or variegated foliage.

Carnation >

Carnations are back in fashion. Its official! Gone are the spiky triangles with the lonely carnations stranded in mid air; and so have the blobs of colour strewn around bouquets. Carnations lend themselves to eccentric arrangements, bound together in bunches with ribbon and leant together in tall glass vases; floating in wide bowls or as a collection of small bouquets fringed by attractive round leaves.

Lisianthus

Lisianthus >

Lisianthus fit perfectly with the summer trends of "wild jungle" colours Don't be afraid to cut the long stems of lisianthus quite short and arrange them in bone-look tumblers, hollowed-out gourds, squashes or in rough where they'll provide a really "hot" look.

Or try rolling the flowers in a large green "jungle" leaf or two. Decorative leaves such as aspidistra, Monstera (Swiss cheese plant) or philodendron make great receptacles for bold colours. Roll the leaves in cylinder shapes, insert the flowers and stand them in a tall vase or container.

< Phlox

Phloxes are often featured on summer fabrics. They fit perfectly into a summer country garden, their fragrance reminiscent of nostalgic summers of childhood. A lovely old-fashioned English country garden bunch, opting for gentle colours and a variety of forms, would be sure to include phloxes. The new trend is to combine phloxes with stronger colours in more boisterous designs. Phloxes are brilliantly versatile!
