Mighty Meat Eater

This Dionaea muscipula - Venus fly trap, as is commonly known - has spiky, upturned leaves that snap shut when touched. An insect-eating plant, it needs partial shade and a humid atmosphere when grown indoors. Water it frequently with rain water if possible, keeping the compost moist and the surrounding air humid. Use a weak solution of liquid fertiliser if the plant growth is poor or if it is not feeding on dead flies or tiny bits of meat. Clusters of tiny white flowers appear in the summer. This a wonderful creation of mother nature that arouses a great deal of interest.
