  • Name - Pronounced BLECH-noom GIB-oom, its common name is tree fern.
  • Description - It has decorative leaves which can grow to 1m (3ft) in an open rosette shape. It will need a reasonable amount of space indoors. With age the plant develops a short, black trunk.
  • Origin - South America
  • Family - Polypodiaceae (polypody ferns)
  • Varieties - Blechnum gibbum is available in both narrow-leafed and wide-leafed varieties.
  • Care Tips - It grows best in warm, not hot rooms away from direct sunlight. Although it is tolerant of dry air, it should be kept moist during the active growth period from mid-spring to late autumn.
  • Trivia - Although from tropical and subtropical regions it is more tolerant of dry rooms than most ferns.
